Do you believe in debates between candidates who wish to run for public office?

Normally I believe that debates are crucial to the potential voter seeing a clearer version of the candidates. The ads certainly aren't honest. But then I saw a debate a couple of years ago for the vice presidency and one of them ignored the questions and gave a stump speech. So that one time it was pretty worthless to have a debate.
